IDC Government Thinks Blockchain Could Improve Government Functions
IDC Government Insights, a market analysis and advisory firm has reported how blockchain act as a secure way to transact and timestamp government data
Their report “The Blockchain Audit Trail: Helping to Establish Government Data Authority and Information Accuracy” talks about how government can use blockchain to govern and manage their data. The report says, blockchains can be used to confirm the origin of a data, track updates for a millions of data. Blockchain can track and store government information in a secure and transparent way. It can track records in a block which can be found in a tamper proof shared record. Blockchain helps to create data structure for government and hence reducing fraud and tampering.
It is high time government makes use of technology like blockchains to manage their data as the volumes of data handled by the government is increasing year after year. The existing data management technology doesn’t seem to facilitate structural and robust way of governing data.
On the other hand, Blockchain can facilitate Government functions such as land registering, digital voting, recording census, etc. IDC focused on three attributes, data authority, data accuracy and access control.
Data authority talks about origin of data, segregation of authorities, i.e. who is authorised to use and change the data and where the authentic copy is of the data is stored.
Data accuracy is about the authenticity and correctness of the data stored. Data accuracy also means they are stored in a consistent form
Access control is about tracking what information is accessible private and public. This includes information about the data, the transactions and the users who can modify the data
IDC predicts that government will test blockchains in the above 3 areas of concern in the future. Government will primarily see where can they use this technology and ways they can leverage the blockchain’s capabilities. It will take time for the government to transition from the existing data management system to more advanced technology like blockchain. However, the change will happen as data governance and maintenance is important for any government to run efficiently.
So what are the ways government can take advantage of blockchain? Share with us your comments and feedback.
